Cornwallis Scores a Double in Newport!

Charlotte Cornwallis retained her World Championship crown today by defeating Karen Hird  - 6/1,6/5. Cornwallis then teamed up with Hird to take the Doubles, as well, defeating Amy Hayball and Juliette Lambert - 6/0,6/3.

In the plate singles final, newcomer, Ana Radeljevic defeated Emily Boenning 10/7. In the Doubles plate, Jen & Beth Winthrop defeated Caroline Lippincott & Petra Napolitano 10/3.

More to come!

Semifinals

Singles – Cornwallis and Hird are through to the final. The match of the day was between #3 seed Freddy Adam and #2 seed Karen Hird. Adam was 4/2 up in the first set, but Hird came back to win the next 4 games and the set 6/4. She tore through the first 4 games of the second ser, before Adam focused and began chipping away. At 4-all, one had to wonder if this would be a repeat of the 2009 US Ladies Open semifinal match between the two. In that match, Hird won the first set and was leading in the second, only to lose the next two sets to Adam.

With Karen visibly frustrated and Adam completely focused, Adam went ahead to 5/4. Hird won the next game to bring it to 5-all. Two unforced errors by Adam, gave Hird all the confidence she needed to take the set and the match 6/5.

Cornwallis had an easier day, dispatching Amy Hayball 6/1,6/0 in a well-played, decisive match.

Doubles – Amy Hayball and Juliette Lambert reached the final by defeating Jane Lippincott and Brenda Nardolillo – 6/3,6/3. In the top half. Cornwallis and Hird beat Adam and Ana Radeljevic 6/0,6/0.

The finals will be played on Saturday beginning at 9:00 am. The schedule is:

9:00 Singles Plate Final – Emily Boenning vs. Ana Radeljevic

10:00 Doubles Plate Final -  Jen & Beth Winthrop vs. Caroline Lippincott & Petra Napolitano

The #8 seed, Barbara Carse, surprised the gallery by winning the second game of the first set against #1 seed and World Champ, Charlotte Cornwallis. Cornwallis went on to win the match 6/1,6/0.
