* Pickin Wins 2011 Etchebaster UPDATED!

Tom Pickin hit the grille on match point to win the 2011 Etchebaster Tournament in Newport this past weekend. The men’s amateur singles event is open to players who: Have less than one year of experience, or Have more than one year, but less than 2 years and have a handicap of 25 and over, or Have a handicap of over 30, regardless of experience. The tournament attracted only entries from Boston and Newport. Sixteen players, evenly divided between the clubs, made up the draw. * Burke Cup – Spangler Wins!

Arnold Spangler of New York added another level championship to his collection by winning the 2011 Burke Cup in Newport this past weekend. Hesitant to travel because of the weather forecast, Spangler opted to make the trip to Newport at the last minute. Good decision as the weather turned out to be nice and Spangler was on his game! Playing two matches on Saturday, Spangler played the match of the weekend in the Saturday night semifinal against Ken Forton of Boston. ~US Junior Nationals

While the “big guns” were pounding it out in the Tuxedo Gold racquet, 17 “future stars” descended upon Washington for the 2010 Junior National Singles. Despite piles of snow, the kids were not even interested in venturing out as their focus was totally on tennis. Ranging in age from 8-18, with some barely able to reach into the trough for balls and others towering over the adults, the juniors played through the weekend. Using a complex scoring system, each junior played numerous matches. ~ Riviere Wins European Open

Camden Riviere won his second consecutive European Open at Lord’s this week. In the final, Riviere played Rob Fahey. Fahey, leading the match 2 sets to 1, retired in the 4th set. The score was 3/6,3/6,6/4,2/1 retired. On the way to the final, Riviere defeated Rich Smith, David Woodman and Ben Matthews. The next stop for both Riviere and Smith is the French Open in Bordeaux, which begins on October 18th. Steve Virgona will alos be competing in the French Open. The US Junior Doubles playing for the Lieb Cup were played in Newport this past weekend. Ranging in age from 8 to 21, ten enthusiastic juniors from Newport, Tuxedo, Aiken, and Seacourt gathered for a weekend of matches, drills, food, and camaraderie. There was even a quiz on court tennis history, etiquette, and current facts that were taught to the kids over the weekend. It was a great success! Curren wins 2008 Burke Cup

A small, but determined group of players gathered in Newport for the 2008 Burke Cup. The tournament, for players in the handicap range of 32-38, was played off handicap.   Frank Curren moved easily through the top half of the draw to reach the finals. The only tight match was between Blake Henderson, who had just returned from a month in Dubai, and world traveler, Peter Bender. Henderson won in three.
