2018 United States Ladies Open

The Tennis & Racquet Club was very proud to host the 2018 Ladies US Open. From November 2nd to 4th the Club members were treated to an exhibition of high-level court tennis in both singles and doubles.

The early rounds produced some fantastic matches including Kathy Pugh narrowly edging Suzy Schwartz, 6-4 6-2, and Amy Wintersteen holding off an up-and-coming Nieve Monderer, 6-4 6-3; a name to watch for the future.

It was very nice to see a crop of young talented players make the trip over from England, with the seeds including Ladies World Champion, Claire Fahey, Jess Garside from Seacourt, Lea Van der Zwalmen and Tara Lumley from Queens Club. All four seeds progressed, unscathed to reach the semi-finals of the singles.

Unfortunately for number 2 seed, Lea Van der Zwalmen, she rolled her ankle early in her semi with Tara Lumley. She tried to battle through, but Tara advanced 6-2 6-0.

In the other half of the draw Claire Fahey put in a dominant performance against Jess Garside in an entertaining 6-0 6-1.

The doubles semi-finals again saw the top seeds advance with Claire Fahey & Tara Lumley defeating Chandra Soucek and Kathy Pugh, and Lea Van der Zwalmen & Jess Garside defeating Amy Wintersteen & Brenda Sabbag.

Sadly, Lea Van der Zwalmen’s injury in the singles meant that they had to forfeit the doubles final granting Claire & Tara the doubles victory. Magnanimously the 3 remaining players agreed to put on a doubles exhibition for the crowd with Leon Van der Smart-en joining them to complete the foursome.

The singles final saw two familiar names with Fahey and Lumley doing battle. The two players showed how accomplished they are in all facets of the game producing some great touch, strong volleying and solid forcing. Although each game was hotly contested, it was Fahey who had a little more to offer winning the match 6-2 6-2.

A big thank you to the USCTA and USCTPF whose support of the event helped make it a reality; also the Tennis & Racquet Club team including tournament chairs Magda & Matt Mitchell; Ryan Carey for his hours and hours of live editing and live streaming which helps bring the game to supporters around the world; finally the T&R members who came out to support the players and create a fun atmosphere.
