This season’s Hadden Tomes Tournament in Tuxedo celebrated the recent passing of the Volstead Act. All of the swells were spiffed up for the fete– and let me tell you it was the cat’s pajamas. A full field of hoofers got started early Friday and played into the wee hours (last scheduled match was at 12:45am), and would have Saturday, too, but for the whoopee kicking up in John Russell Pope’s ritzy new clubhouse. The Anti-Saloon League shut the place down but the party found its way to Bugsy Devereux’s speakeasy, where there was hooch and gambling and music to make the flappers go wild.

In the tennis, Division D: Jelly Roll Ewing and Temple The Sheik Grassi rolled over Lady Brett Livingston and Capone Mazzone 6/0 6/3. Division C: Torpedo Hebard and Pablo Sacks bumped off Romero Romero and The Spangler 6/3 4/6 6/4. Division B: The Great Regna and Foxtrot Gilder took Daisy Avedissian and Ernest Buettner for a ride 6/3 6/1. Division A: Bluenose Moroscak and Lucky Laukitis cut up McHugh The Knife and Ryan (Nick) Carey-way 6/5 0/6 6/3 The fix was in.

Following the Sunday finals many of the revelers yanked up their knickers and took to the links with hickory shafted niblicks and spoons. A Golden group of Bugsy D, Van Gaugh West, Njinksy, Tweed Wilson and Buchanan Owens nearly took down Tuxedo’s club Champ and his gang. In the 4-some Scramble Sara Jordan Baker, Lady Brett and Lucky and Lindy Laukitis triumphed at 2 under. Ms Baker hinted the secret of their success was the loaded tennis trophy, promptly drained.

See you next year!
