Steve Virgona overcame Camden Riviere on 7 December to win this tournament, which is open to players who are are either American or based there, in 5 sets. Virgona took a 2 – 0 lead before his opponent got into top gear, and it went to 2 all, although Riviere was apparently suffering badly from blisters. After 8 set points at various stages in the match Virgona finally took it at 6 – 4

It was by all accounts a brilliant, spell-binding match, played as customary with great sportsmanship. As is so often the case in tennis these days, those watching find themselves congratulating both players! There is further reporting ‘from the scene’ on the RTO message board:

6/5, 6/1, 5/6, 5/6, 6/4
