The Clothier Cup, a bi-annual event between Australia and the US was held in Hobart last week. The US team comprised of Bradley Allen (Captain), Will Broadbent, Will Thompson and Pat Winthrop defeated the Australian team 7-1.

The event is held over two days — using a singles and doubles format. Congratulations to the team! Plus a huge thanks to Howard McMorris for organizing the US end of the event.

In a congratulatory note, Tony Poolman (ARTA Chairman) writes:

Jim (Wharton) and Howard (McMorris),

You will no doubt have already learned the result of the Clothier Cup match played in Hobart on Monday and Tuesday.

You have my and ARTA’s congratulations, not just for the comprehensive seven matches to one result, but as much as anything else for sending a team of outstanding young men who displayed all the qualities one could hope for.  They were/are great ambassadors for your country and an ornament to the game.  It was a pleasure to get to know them, albeit all too briefly.

The matches were played hard and in great spirit and sportsmanship.  The players from both teams have made new friends that I have no doubt will be enduring ones.  I know our players are keenly looking forward to 2009 – if selected of course – as not only another chance to represent their country but also to renew those friendships.

As they have done for previous Clothier Cups, Alistair Curley and Hobart Real Tennis Club pulled out all stops – the hospitality was exceptional – Hobart is definitely, in my opinion, the right Club to hold the CC when it is in Australia.   I hope your players enjoyed being with us as much as we enjoyed having them.  We will certainly look forward to welcoming a USCTA team again in 2011.

With best regards,

Tony
