The format of the Jay Gould was changed in 2005 to become a doubles tournament and was played at the Tennis & Racquet Club in Boston along with the Jimmy Knott Memorial.  With the first round going as expected, the semifinals featured exciting contests.  In the top half, the T&R’s Jeremy Wintersteen and Shawn Herlihy lost the first set 1-6 and were down in the second before winning the next sets 6-5, 6-1 against a tough team of Pat Winthrop (NTC) and Hugo Burge (T&R).  In the other semifinal, Newport’s duo of Doug Spear and John Damon squared off against the T&R’s Matt Porter and Rob McLane.  The first set was an exciting one and went back and forth.  Spear & Damon had one set point but Porter & McLane prevailed 6-5, 6-1.  In the final, Porter and McLane won the first set but Wintersteen and Herlihy improved and took the second.  In the third, Porter & McLane played well with an effective combination of a steady floor game and aggressive volleys and won 6-4, 2-6, 6-4.
