May 9, 2004 At the National Tennis Club, Newport RI: Play was completed in these three national events on Mothers’ Day.

In the singles final, the current and former world champions, and #1 and #2 seeds, Penny Lumley and Charlotte Cornwallis, both of Great Britain, faced off.  After falling behind 1/5 in the first set, Cornwallis ripped off 11 of the next 14 games, to win the title, defeating the defender by a score of 6/5, 6/3.

In the ladies’ doubles final, # 1seeds Cornwallis and her partner, Alex Garside (also of Great Britain) faced off against Lumley and Evelyn David, seeded second.  Cornwallis and Garside were nearly perfect, winning easily, 6/0, 6/1.

In the mixed doubles final, defending champions and the #1 seeds Jane Lippincott of Jamestown RI and Gabe Kinzler (both of Newport) met Alex Garside and her partner, Alex Walsh of Newport, who reached with a semifinal three-set win over #2 seeds and previous winners of this event, Lumley and Kip Curren of Middletown, RI.   Lippincott and Kinzler won handily, 6/2, 6/1.
